Announcing January 2023 NNLM Reading Club: Year-in-Review

As we begin a new year, the NNLM Reading Club would like to reflect on the past year. This January, we share highlights and even offer updates of past content by adding new, exciting resources to previous health-topic themes. We are open to feedback and are in the beginning stages of organizing a user feedback survey. One of our goals is to continually improve to better meet the needs of those who use our resources. The survey is forthcoming, but for now, please enjoy this year-in-review from the NNLM Reading Club in 2022!

For information on each of our three featured books, free downloadable book club discussion guides, customizable promotional materials and more, and a summary of our club’s 2022 highlights, visit https://nnlm.gov/nnlm-reading-club.

NNLM Book Discussion

Join your fellow librarians, health professionals, and public health workers for our fourth NNLM Book Discussion. We will read Bad Advice: Or Why Celebrities, Politicians, and Activists Aren't Your Best Source of Health Information by Paul A. Offit, M.D.

After acquiring the book in your preferred format, you can join us any time between February 1 until April 30, 2023, to participate.

NNLM Book Discussion offers librarians, health professionals, and public health workers interested in better understanding health issues faced by people in the communities that they serve an opportunity to explore topics with other professionals and earn Continuing Education Credit.

Participants can complete the book and earn CE credit on their schedule. Participants can acquire the book in their performed format and have three months to complete the requirements.

Steps to Better Health with All of Us

Do you get your daily steps in? Walking every day can help prevent diseases, but exactly how many steps protect against which diseases is harder to understand. A new study, published in Nature Medicine, linked Fitbit data shared by All of Us participants with electronic health records. Researchers found that participants who took at least 8,200 steps a day had lower risks for certain health conditions. This included chronic diseases like high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. It also uncovered new links between steps and lower risk for sleep apnea, depression, and acid reflux.
